Species Information

The Sulfolobus tokodaii str. 7 genome is 2.69 Million bp long and contains approximately 2874 predicted genes. S. tokodaii is a hyperthermophilic acidophile. It grows optimally at pH 2.5-3 at approximately 80C. S. tokodaii is an obligate aerobe and metabolizes sulfur.

Taxonomy: Archaea; Crenarchaeota; Thermoprotei; Sulfolobales; Sulfolobaceae; Sulfolobus.

Sequencing: The sequence was released August 2001 by the NITE, and was described in DNA Res 8:123-40 (2001) Kawarabayasi Y, Hino Y, Horikawa H, Jin-no K, Takahashi M, et al.."Complete genome sequence of an aerobic thermoacidophilic crenarchaeon, Sulfolobus tokodaii strain7."

Abstract: The complete genomic sequence of an aerobic thermoacidophilic crenarchaeon, Sulfolobus tokodaii strain7 which optimally grows at 80 degrees C, at low pH, and under aerobic conditions, has been determined by the whole genome shotgun method with slight modifications. The genomic size was 2,694,756 bp long and the G + C content was 32.8%. Abstract: The taxonomic position of a thermoacidophilic crenarchaeote Sulfolobus sp. strain 7, previously isolated from the Beppu Hot Springs in the geothermal area of Kyushu Island, Japan, was investigated by cloning and sequencing, by phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, by DNA-DNA homology with similar species, and by biochemical characterization of the isolate.
