Species Information

The Methanococcus aeolicus Nankai-3 genome is 1.57 Million bp long and contains approximately 1552 predicted genes.

Taxonomy: Archaea; Euryarchaeota; Methanococci; Methanococcales; Methanococcaceae; Methanococcus.

The most recent genome sequence draft was released 06/29/2007 by the DOE Joint Genome Institute, but there is no associated genome publication to date.

Isolation: Int J Syst Evol Microbiol 56:1525-9 (2006) Kendall MM, Liu Y, Sieprawska-Lupa M, Stetter KO, Whitman WB, et al. "Methanococcus aeolicus sp. nov., a mesophilic, methanogenic archaeon from shallow and deep marine sediments."

Abstract: Three strains of CO(2)-reducing methanogens were isolated from marine sediments. Strain PL-15/H(P) was isolated from marine sediments of the Lipari Islands, near Sicily and the other two strains, Nankai-2 and Nankai-3(T), were isolated from deep marine sediments of the Nankai Trough, about 50 km from the coast of Japan. Analysis of the cellular proteins and 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that these three strains represented a single novel species that formed a deep branch of the... The Archaeal Genome Browsers at UCSC were developed by members of theLowe Lab (Kevin Schneider,Katherine Pollard, Andy Pohl, Todd Lowe) and Robert Baertsch, with significant support fromthe UCSC Human GenomeBrowser group. The Archaeal Browsers are run by a slightly modifiedversion of the UCSC Human GenomeBrowser system. All queries, bug reports, content corrections, suggested improvements, and new track data submissions should be sent to Todd Lowe (lowe@soe.ucsc.edu).
