Species InformationThe Methanococcus maripaludis S2 genome is 1.66 Million bp long and contains approximately 1772 predicted genes. M. maripaludis S2 is a mesophilic methanogen which was isolated from salt marsh sediment in South Carolina. It grows on carbon dioxide and hydrogen, producing methane.
Taxonomy: Archaea; Euryarchaeota; Methanococci; Methanococcales; Methanococcaceae; Methanococcus.
Sequencing: The sequence was released May 2004 by the University of Washington, and was described in J Bacteriol 186:6956-69 (2004) Hendrickson EL, Kaul R, Zhou Y, Bovee D, Chapman P, et al.."Complete genome sequence of the genetically tractable hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanococcus maripaludis." Abstract: The genome sequence of the genetically tractable, mesophilic, hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanococcus maripaludis contains 1,722 protein-coding genes in a single circular chromosome of 1,661,137 bp. Of the protein-coding genes (open reading frames [ORFs]), 44% were assigned a function, 48% were conserved but had unknown or uncertain functions, and 7.5% (129 ORFs) were unique to M. maripaludis. Of the unique ORFs, 27 were confirmed to encode proteins by the mass spectrometric... Sample position queriesA genome position can be specified by chromosomal coordinate range, COGID, or keywords from the GenBank or TIGR description of a gene. The available chromosome/plasmid names are:
| Browser Chrom/Plasmid Name | Length (bp) | GC Content (%) | Gene Count | NCBI RefSeq Accession |
| chr | 1661137 | 33.10 | 1772 | NC_005791 |
The following list shows examples of valid position queries for thisgenome: | Request: | Genome Browser Response: |
|---|
| chr | Displays the entire sequence "chr" in the browser window | | chr:1-10000 | Displays first ten thousand bases of the sequence "chr" | | transporter | Lists all genes with "transporter" in the name or description | | MMP0010 | Display genome at position of gene MMP0010 |
