Species Information

The Hyperthermus butylicus DSM 5456 genome is 1.67 Million bp long and contains approximately 1672 predicted genes.

Taxonomy: Archaea; Crenarchaeota; Thermoprotei; Desulfurococcales; Pyrodictiaceae; Hyperthermus.

The most recent genome sequence draft was released 01/22/2007 by the University of Copenhagen, but there is no associated genome publication to date.

Isolation: J Bacteriol 172:3959-65 (1990) Zillig W, Holz I, Janekovic D, Klenk HP, Imsel E, et al. "Hyperthermus butylicus, a hyperthermophilic sulfur-reducing archaebacterium that ferments peptides."

Abstract: The hyperthermophilic peptide-fermenting sulfur archaebacterium Hyperthermus butylicus was isolated from the sea floor of a solfataric habitat with temperatures of up to 112 degrees C on the coast of the island of Sao Miguel, Azores. The organism grows at up to 108 degrees C, grows optimally between 95 and 106 degrees C at 17 g of NaCl per liter and pH 7.0, utilizes peptide mixtures as carbon and energy sources, and forms H2S from elemental sulfur and molecular hydrogen as a... The Archaeal Genome Browsers at UCSC were developed by members of theLowe Lab (Kevin Schneider,Katherine Pollard, Andy Pohl, Todd Lowe) and Robert Baertsch, with significant support fromthe UCSC Human GenomeBrowser group. The Archaeal Browsers are run by a slightly modifiedversion of the UCSC Human GenomeBrowser system. All queries, bug reports, content corrections, suggested improvements, and new track data submissions should be sent to Todd Lowe (lowe@soe.ucsc.edu).
