About the Haloquadratum walsbyi 07/25/06 (haloWals1) assembly (sequences)

Species Information

The Haloquadratum walsbyi DSM 16790 genome is 3.18 Million bp long and contains approximately 2914 predicted genes.

Taxonomy: Archaea; Euryarchaeota; Halobacteria; Halobacteriales; Halobacteriaceae; Haloquadratum.

Sequencing: The sequence was released 07/25/06 by the Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry and the University of Groningen, and was described in BMC Genomics 7:169 (2006) Bolhuis H, Palm P, Wende A, Falb M, Rampp M, et al.."The genome of the square archaeon Haloquadratum walsbyi : life at the limits of water activity."

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The square halophilic archaeon Haloquadratum walsbyi dominates NaCl-saturated and MgCl2 enriched aquatic ecosystems, which imposes a serious desiccation stress, caused by the extremely low water activity. The genome sequence was analyzed and physiological and physical experiments were carried out in order to reveal how H. walsbyi has specialized into its narrow and hostile ecological niche and found ways to cope with the desiccation stress. RESULTS: A rich repertoire of... [Click above reference link for full abstract]

The Archaeal Genome Browsers at UCSC were developed by members of theLowe Lab (Kevin Schneider,Katherine Pollard, Andy Pohl, Todd Lowe) and Robert Baertsch, with significant support fromthe UCSC Human GenomeBrowser group. The Archaeal Browsers are run by a slightly modifiedversion of the UCSC Human GenomeBrowser system. All queries, bug reports, content corrections, suggested improvements, and new track data submissions should be sent to Todd Lowe (lowe@soe.ucsc.edu).
